Size
Cold alpine aspects (N-NE-E) are supported by a layer of weak facets at the ground. A strong crust sits directly above the facets. Additional snow loading this weak layer, combined with the weight of a single skier may be enough to collapse the weak layer triggering avalanches on steep slopes.
